Hello Beauty Bloggers! Today, I want to share one of my favorite recent beauty tricks! In 2012, the sock bun took us by storm. It is fun, easy to do, easy to accessorize, and looks fabulous! However, I found a device that makes it even easier! Enter the donut.<br />
<br />
The donut is made of a meshy, spongy material, and comes in multiple sizes and colors. What I like about it is the hair tends to hold better to the material, and it allows bobby pins to be inserted directly into the device, making for better security. If that isn't enough, it also comes in my hair color, which makes it harder to spot.<br />
<br />
Here's how it works!<br />
<br />
Step 1: Tie hair off in a pony tail at the point where you want your bun.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwGLAtGWPGIysJIpMTv5ivGlxnm0YUZd0TppJ7Z24nBSj4J6CzJl-K7hw8VUIp_fDMw4P6CrW3ysfRXpTa_XP1uZJHUPk1xYDIQGLjemu5zwFskmKkG1BlzRTYLPLtuawFMFMkMWUN7Rg/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwGLAtGWPGIysJIpMTv5ivGlxnm0YUZd0TppJ7Z24nBSj4J6CzJl-K7hw8VUIp_fDMw4P6CrW3ysfRXpTa_XP1uZJHUPk1xYDIQGLjemu5zwFskmKkG1BlzRTYLPLtuawFMFMkMWUN7Rg/s1600/1.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Step 2: Pull the pony through the center of the donut.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY3IM8MOCyiHn-gp5DfPRqDqTv5lpl_4nEh11extuVlIptqCGy9LT1LGUBRkVD0oGXRCFiGemF7gHRsgmlR_J2exgITZWvWbh0KiuvhlvVkatdz3cPP7xIJMy5Ge_lrmWacFAzCOZLamg/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY3IM8MOCyiHn-gp5DfPRqDqTv5lpl_4nEh11extuVlIptqCGy9LT1LGUBRkVD0oGXRCFiGemF7gHRsgmlR_J2exgITZWvWbh0KiuvhlvVkatdz3cPP7xIJMy5Ge_lrmWacFAzCOZLamg/s1600/2.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH5jDB7c-7rGRpXcovsL3C2-_xM9LuKP8sPHZKCIj1ceYKDnbD469PtU3-nG3IrxUk4Qog89xHBzwrNs5TCE13XaPHSOpzZ-WCfgNy4T4tRnKCGRLEfwefHVcyD0QOTz2pg0QMPCGpWpo/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH5jDB7c-7rGRpXcovsL3C2-_xM9LuKP8sPHZKCIj1ceYKDnbD469PtU3-nG3IrxUk4Qog89xHBzwrNs5TCE13XaPHSOpzZ-WCfgNy4T4tRnKCGRLEfwefHVcyD0QOTz2pg0QMPCGpWpo/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Step 3: Slide the donut up the pony until it gets to the ends. Don't go so far that the pieces begin to fall out. If that happens, slide it back down and repeat Step 3.<br />
<br />
Step 4: Tuck the ends under the donut. I even tuck them back up in to the center of the donut for maximum hold.<br />
<br />
Step 5: Start turning the donut inside out, rolling it down the ponytail until you get to the base. The number of turns depend on the length of your hair. The longer the hair, the more turns.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The bun will probably be a little loose when you get to the bottom. I pin the loose hairs under the bun (or into it) to make it tighter.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAhMKTrN9Q5rEn4ppV1CYmeNz_7WfmoWGiSnxFNZFoRqGMfUxrm_Vmezi_yOWpy7HngqOg2WuV52L9GEy7Vig15cG4dFHSTcfgjZtozsJ3o4UdlAntUDCAvzstpvv1-xq00V1Atf_H6z8/s1600/82.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAhMKTrN9Q5rEn4ppV1CYmeNz_7WfmoWGiSnxFNZFoRqGMfUxrm_Vmezi_yOWpy7HngqOg2WuV52L9GEy7Vig15cG4dFHSTcfgjZtozsJ3o4UdlAntUDCAvzstpvv1-xq00V1Atf_H6z8/s1600/82.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Experiment with some accessories (flowers, bows, etc.) to make it your own! There are a bazilion (yes, that many) ways to get creative with a fun bun!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Today's topic is a difficult one for me, but I feel it is too important to ignore. So, here goes!<br />
<br />
According to Facebook, the most popular 2013 New Year's Resolution is to lose weight. Although I'm not surprised by the statistic, it was initially saddening. Don't get me wrong - I think it's great when people take care of their bodies, and feel good doing it.<br />
<br />
I've lived much of my life feeling insecure about my own body. In high school, I tried dieting, different exercise regimes, some healthy and some not. I read books and watched programs, and it quickly became an obsession. Despite all the time and energy I put into feeling great about my body, I never felt truly comfortable.<br />
<br />
The reason for this is that I was putting effort into changing my body with the belief that when it was what I wanted, I would accept it. In college, I realized that my body would change and fluctuate my entire life, and the secret to feeling great wasn't to look great.<br />
<br />
Feeling great came when I stopped comparing myself to other people. It happened when every negative thought was followed by ten positive ones, until the negative thoughts stopped altogether. A positive self-image came as a result of understanding that my body is unique, and rather than trying to look like other people, I should celebrate what I have, and take care of it.<br />
<br />
If you resolved to improve your body this year, you have the full support of EOB! However, I challenge you to take your resolution one step further, and work on building a more positive self-image. Every morning, list five things you like about who you are. Surround yourself with positive people. And never, ever, entertain the idea that you are not beautiful.<br />
<br />
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so focus those eyes to see the real, beautiful you!<br />
<br />
Happy New Year,<br />
<br />
Rory<br />

Don't be afraid try accessorizing like we did with a little red rose. The French Twist is a great style if you want simple elegance, or if you want to experiment with flowers, bows, clips, headbands, etc. </div>

This is a winter trend I wish I took more advantage of. Hats are a great accessory because so much heat is retained through the head, and hats come in more styles than just about any other accessory. For this chapter of our Winter Series, we're going to showcase some of the most common styles of the season:<br />

Today's tutorial isn't an easy one. The five-piece braid is complicated, not because of the process, but because of the nature of the braid. No matter how dexterous your hands may be, most of us have only two at the most, and juggling five strands takes a lot of concentration and coordination. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I began the braid by taking a small chunk of hair from the heavier side of a side-part. Next, I separated the hair into five even pieces.<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEien5CoGLKS7KifaO3w3x6aEwYPnJiLaHm0iqqj4R7GBreHY1Hfldv2LsSeFgbkaoKxE_GEdmSiKQN1JiiMI44iYltRy_2WD28xah_snfxzubjoTUsLHl2Iwk4GI4OgHYJcoGEWXLBjMFw/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEien5CoGLKS7KifaO3w3x6aEwYPnJiLaHm0iqqj4R7GBreHY1Hfldv2LsSeFgbkaoKxE_GEdmSiKQN1JiiMI44iYltRy_2WD28xah_snfxzubjoTUsLHl2Iwk4GI4OgHYJcoGEWXLBjMFw/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Mike B.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">
The five-piece braid is essentially made up of weaving the five pieces in-and-out of each other. I begin with the right piece and pull it <b>over </b>the piece directly to its left. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Next, I pull it <b>under</b> the next one to the left. Then, I go <b>over</b> the next piece. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Instead of going under the following piece (on the far right), I took the strand on the far right and pulled it <b>over</b> the new strand now directly to it's right.</div>

Hello beauty bloggers!<br />
<br />
My apologies for being remiss. This is a reminder that we are still alive, however, the next week consists of finals. Preparing shoots and articles has gotten increasingly difficult with all that's going on at school, but we are trying our best to keep up!<br />
<br />
Thank you all for your support!<br />

Happy Thanksgiving!<br />
<br />
We are so thankful for a lot around here. We're especially thankful for your support and suggestions over the course of our first year on the internet.<br />
<br />
Let's remember to keep the spirit of Thanksgiving <i>all </i>year because there is always something to be thankful for!<br />

To kick off our winter series, we're going to talk about scarves! I convinced my friend, <a href="http://boston-ivy.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">Samantha</a>, to play dress-up with me as we discussed our favorite scarves and how we like to wear them.<br />
<br />
Scarf #1 is one of my personal favorites. I just love the idea of wrapping a heavy scarf around my face to keep warm. It's comfy, cozy, and carefree! To wear this scarf, you simply wrap it around your neck (Not too tight!) until it reaches its desired length and thickness.<br />
<br />
To me, these scarves are the sweatpants of the accessorizing world. You can wear them with anything for instant comfort for a relaxed and informal feel. They are also fun to get in neutrals or bright colors (like Samantha's).</div>

</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Scarf #2 is my personal go-to for cold weather accessorizing (I'm wearing it right now)! It's perfect because the many colors go with anything, and it is a bright pop of color to go with winter's greys, browns, blacks, and other neutrals.<br />
<br />
To wear it like Samantha, fold the scarf in half (from 6ft to 3ft), wrap it around the back of your neck so over one shoulder you have the tassels or ends, and over the other is a loop. Tuck the end through the loop and pull until it reaches its desired tightness. </div>

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="clear: right; display: inline; float: none; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">Samantha is wearing Scarf #3 in the style of an ascot. It's traditionally a mens accessory, however, on women it looks sophisticated with a dash of prep. Read Samantha's article from Lucky Mag on how to wear an ascot scarf <a href="http://www.luckymag.com/blogs/luckyrightnow/2012/07/how-to-wear-a-scarf-like-an-ascot" target="_blank">here</a>.</span><br />

Scarf #4 is an accent scarf. It's purpose isn't to keep the wearer warm, but just to look fabulous. Samantha is a writer, so this scarf is the perfect accent for her! You can also have fun picking out specialty scarves that showcase your interests. </div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222;">Scarves have come to be an always increasing love of mine all throughout the year, but especially in the winter since I get to wear my absolute favorite long, warm-knit scarves. My current favorite is a super long cream colored one that, like any go to accesory, I can wear with anything! I especially love wearing it as I walk down the street on a windy winter day, especially whn I feel rather stiff in the many warm layers protecting me from the chill. As the tip of it swings side to side I feel my step turn into a sudden sache, beginning to imagine myself as a heroine from a book or classic film, about to embark on the next big step in my own story.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222;"><br /></span></i></span><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222;"><br /></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222;">Just like being mood lifters, scarves can also be outfit lifters. As a pair of cute summer shoes or purse do, scarves can be that extra pop of color you could be looking for if you feel your winter could use some brightening up! They also make for a lovely, and timeless gift perfect for anyone this time of year, making them all the more splendid winter-time accessory for anyone in need of a simple addition to their ensemble, with the perfect added touch of warmth.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222;"> </span></span></i></div>

Hello all you beautiful bloggers!<br />
<br />
In the upcoming weeks, I will be writing about some of my favorite winter/cold weather trends. I used to hate the cold weather because I felt there was no way to look good <i>and</i> be comfortable. I'm pleased to say that is no longer the case!<br />
<br />
I'm still in the process of discovering all the wonderful winter-time fashions, so if you have a favorite, send us a photo and/or information about why you love your cold-weather trend. You can e-mail us at: <a href="mailto:anewbeautyblog@gmail.com">anewbeautyblog@gmail.com</a>.<br />

<br />
Last night, I saw this hairstyle on a contestant on "The Voice", and desperately wanted to try it out! Lucky for me, I was enjoying a wonderful evening with some girlfriends who let me experiment with their hair. Here's what we got!<br />
<br />
Step 1: Take a small section of hair from one side of the head.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU7IEzDkjSA-uxFd99Ryzw5zErLIntVG-IhvaAAbRPh6G6qTLxZ2VgLee0oJmmfYRx9oMnwMZx6FOitXPrtSj28TP4S6wy-72xQd1vuAMaQBWI8XlD8YM0Oo-Dy6BwWOzeleVjI6z5RNw/s1600/zoe1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU7IEzDkjSA-uxFd99Ryzw5zErLIntVG-IhvaAAbRPh6G6qTLxZ2VgLee0oJmmfYRx9oMnwMZx6FOitXPrtSj28TP4S6wy-72xQd1vuAMaQBWI8XlD8YM0Oo-Dy6BwWOzeleVjI6z5RNw/s400/zoe1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Step 2: Begin braiding small section around the head until you start getting to the back.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl7NMfCpHO4GRMtsIH1xP1Zvm1Y_HUcLViEc6q94NkmnY9Na-_3EWW0Q4o1GUoi83W0Do8fHVGqYFcFSZhCO_EPnxw7XAFzifpwElB9zT1pqLpx0Q8zEi_L8bMcPZtZKmEn1YQtPQGyUc/s1600/zoe2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl7NMfCpHO4GRMtsIH1xP1Zvm1Y_HUcLViEc6q94NkmnY9Na-_3EWW0Q4o1GUoi83W0Do8fHVGqYFcFSZhCO_EPnxw7XAFzifpwElB9zT1pqLpx0Q8zEi_L8bMcPZtZKmEn1YQtPQGyUc/s400/zoe2.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Step 3: Once you get to the back, start adding strands to the upper side of the braid. This looks like a French braid with hair only being added to one side.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoeEol1VYCRFOXfFN9mMV33CftUQ2nm7S8rv_kgh3onXPdbZVoKYdwJEsHzw5MoFyq0Vb5wv2HMVlJW6rt_KHrUPYI56aCSO-hvBGVqxkbx-LgbNl2ktCgil81qj1CjbCtQN4BfAL4-sM/s1600/zoe3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoeEol1VYCRFOXfFN9mMV33CftUQ2nm7S8rv_kgh3onXPdbZVoKYdwJEsHzw5MoFyq0Vb5wv2HMVlJW6rt_KHrUPYI56aCSO-hvBGVqxkbx-LgbNl2ktCgil81qj1CjbCtQN4BfAL4-sM/s400/zoe3.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Step 4: Continue half-French braiding, angling the braid downwards. It should begin to look diagonal. Follow this step until you reach the opposite side from which you began.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Step 5. Finish the braid, and tie it off.<br />

Over the weekend, my brother told me something that struck me so much I knew I needed to write about it. Saturday night, we went to a birthday party. Afterwards, he walked me to the bus stop, and we chatted until the bus came. We talked about the party and the neighborhood, and all manner of silly things until he suddenly became very serious.<br />
<br />
"Rory, you're beautiful. You know that?"<br />
<br />
I let that sink in for a moment. I wasn't sure what he meant, but I knew he wasn't referring to how I looked that night. As if reading my mind, he said, "Not like fashion and style beauty, although you always look good, but the inner beauty." Cue heart melt.<br />
<br />
I spoke with a friend over the summer about what we referred to as the "B-word" and how it connotes so much more than good looks. The word "beautiful" carries a weight with it that's hard to describe. It consists of all these inner qualities that radiate out. I love this quote from Roald Dahl's <i>The Twits</i>. I think it captures what I'm trying to say perfectly:<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #181818; line-height: 18px;">"A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #181818; line-height: 18px;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
And it also goes the other way.<br />
<br />
I once knew someone who would have been deemed "beautiful" by worldly standards. She had a coveted physique, fabulous hair, great bone structure, and flawless skin. I don't know what she spent her thoughts on, but she often spoke judgmental and condemning words. As a result, she had few friends, and people began to sense the inner person before even acknowledging her looks.<br />
<br />
People have different ways of attaining their personal beauty. It is found in anything that lights your fire- anything that gets you excited about life. The most effective makeover trick I could ever pass on would be this: Fill your heart with so much joy and passion that it has nowhere to go but out. There is nothing more beautiful than that.<br />
<br />
This isn't meant to sound like, "Oh hey, look at how cool I am", but starting this blog has been a sort of check for me. It's pushed me to do and experience more of life that gets me excited. Since then, it's inspired me to chase a life that produces inner beauty. This is merely an encouragement to find your beauty and share it with the world!<br />
<br />
Happy weekend!<br />

As a petite shopper, it's annoying when I find a pair of jeans that fit in all the right places, but the length is all wrong. I can't tell you how many jeans I've destroyed by doubling the hems as socks. Jeans are not meant to be walked on, especially over extended periods of time. So here are some tips if your jeans are too long!<br />
<br />
1. Roll<br />

Today, I'm sharing another product I absolutely love! Like my red lips <a href="http://anewbeautyblog.blogspot.com/2012/10/our-daily-red.html" target="_blank">post</a>, I have certain criteria by which I judge liquid eyeliner. Here they are-<br />
<br />
Easy to apply.<br />
Create a dramatic line with minimal mess/smudge.<br />
Come off easily with a Q-tip when I mess up, but must not fade throughout the day.<br />
Can't bust the bank.<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinqa4FewPAsIdVNsOi_3aXCUvsmG9_taae5KU1xSszf5h-4uubcKSvbJKQC9OsZO_RcXqZJSwa9EqDflqThXNG4PORfzX3DEsUD9pHLSiMd6SHfr1cq_5jmpBywmN0Cjfmyb4odeZhXGQ/s1600/liner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinqa4FewPAsIdVNsOi_3aXCUvsmG9_taae5KU1xSszf5h-4uubcKSvbJKQC9OsZO_RcXqZJSwa9EqDflqThXNG4PORfzX3DEsUD9pHLSiMd6SHfr1cq_5jmpBywmN0Cjfmyb4odeZhXGQ/s320/liner.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I found all of these in the <a href="http://www.milanicosmetics.com/p-66-eye-tech-liquid-eye-liner.aspx" target="_blank">Milani Eye Tech Liquid Eye Liner</a>. This liner is compact (comes in one piece) and has a felt tip that makes it easy-peesy to apply. And the best part? You can find it at any pharmacy or your local drug store. Yippee!<br />
<br />
So if you're feeling some drama or a 1960s vibe, give liquid liner a try!<br />

With Halloween (or "Halloweek", as they say it at my school) upon us, there are so many opportunities for costume and style-related posts. However, I'm taking time to write about something that's bothered me every Halloween for much of my adolescent/adult life.<br />
<br />
Each year, I get very excited to put together the best, most creative, most cost-effective costume out there. (I secretly try to beat out everyone in the entire world for "Best Costume".) But each year, there's something that haunts (pun intended) my costume-related thoughts, and that is sex appeal.<br />
<br />
It's pretty impossible nowadays to shop for a Halloween costume without seeing advertisements for "Sexy This" or "Sexy That", "Sexy Potato", "Sexy Carrot", etc. As for me, I take Halloween as an opportunity to express myself creatively, and it often isn't very sexy. The truth is, that just isn't me.<br />
<br />
I spoke with a couple of friends on the matter, and they agreed. There is a social pressure to look "hot" or "sexy" on Halloween. The other night, I attended an event hosted by my school, and dressed up as a particular 1930s television star. It wasn't very sexy, and I felt unattractive, as if no one would appreciate (or even notice!) my costume because it still left much to the imagination.<br />
<br />
Talking to my friends helped me realize that being myself was the sexy part. We agreed that the amount of skin you show doesn't make a difference if you look uncomfortable in it. This Halloween, we're challenging all you ladies out there not to dress the way you think you're expected to, but rather the way that makes you <i>feel</i> your best, whether that is a 1930s television star or a sexy potato.<br />
<br />
This year, be the best version of you.<br />
<br />

If you've been following us for a while, you should know by now that my sister <a href="http://anewbeautyblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/tessas-just-about-any-occasion-look.html" target="_blank">Tessa</a> has the most wonderful curly hair. Unlike many curly-heads I've talked to, Tessa love-love-loves(!) her curls. Despite her love for her natural locks, sometimes she craves a sleeker look when leaving it down, or even when putting it up. For that, we enlist the help of our good friend: Mr. Hair-straightener.<br />

Now before you throw rotten fruit at me saying, "But Rory! Heat kills hair!", let me clarify that everyday straightening will, over time, hurt your hair, and I would never suggest you do that. However, once-in-a-while straightening will not kill your hair.<br />
<br />
Now that we've got that straightened out (Haha, get it?), let's get to it!<br />
<br />
Step 1: Begin with dry curls and brush them out. I know this part isn't fun, but good luck trying to straighten curls without this step. Seriously, brush those babies.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqhiBZso_GZV1PAO6XtCZasUYbi7Gvs7Mt2QTghapaREhGbdrYZ4J3dcZEAnoM2-cA179plWY3zw3hj9YXulGSxLtT7BrK9Xt2pyFy3fQHH-bxtRcb0saR3mrvSnbKy4_L1Y6iAiPM5hk/s1600/tess6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqhiBZso_GZV1PAO6XtCZasUYbi7Gvs7Mt2QTghapaREhGbdrYZ4J3dcZEAnoM2-cA179plWY3zw3hj9YXulGSxLtT7BrK9Xt2pyFy3fQHH-bxtRcb0saR3mrvSnbKy4_L1Y6iAiPM5hk/s320/tess6.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Step 2: Separate your locks. Trying to straighten a large chunk of hair often doesn't work, and you end up running two hot plates over the same area, exposing it to heat damage. So we put half of Tessa's hair up, and began working with smaller sections.<br />
<br />
Step 3: Start straightening! The pieces we did were about 1/8 inch thick and 2 inches wide. We intentionally left the ends curled (She eventually braided it, and the curly ends looked so cute!).<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Try not to hold the straightener on a particular spot for too long. It could result in burning the hair. Just clamp it shut, and run it down to the ends.</div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; text-align: right;"><tbody>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Step 4: Once you've succeeded in straightening the entire head, use some product to smooth and hydrate the 'do. We used <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Frieda-Frizz-Ease-Extra-Strength-Ounces/dp/B000P9DS4Q" target="_blank">John Freida Frizz-Ease Extra-Strength Serum</a>.</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Your hair wants to revert back to its natural state, so keep it away from water and humidity, if possible.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Your ends are the most delicate parts of your hair. be gentle on them when straightening because it is easier for them to get split or damaged by excessive heat.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Feel free to use a heat protective serum or lotion to protect your hair against damage. I usually use <a href="http://www.amazon.com/CrazySleek-Smooth-Flat-Iron-Lotion/dp/B000EODF9K" target="_blank">Got2be Crazysleek Flat Iron and Blow Dry Lotion</a>. </div>
<br />
Like every part of our bodies, the health and safety of your hair should come before style! Be sure to consult a hair stylist or a friend if you're concerned about how heat straightening may be affecting your hair over the long run. My sister and I have been doing this for years, but we're always very careful. So take care of your hair, and have fun switching up your style!<br />

I was sitting in class the other day, listening to the pre-lecture chatter. I suppose you could call it eavesdropping, but the way I see it is if you're talking loudly in a room full of people, you're pretty much fair game.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I overheard a conversation between two girls about someone they knew in high school. I tuned in at the line: <i>Yeah, that bitch will never be skinny again</i>.<br />
<br />
Ouch.<br />
<br />
Part of me cringed, a lot. And it wasn't because the woman they were discussing had gained weight (if it were, I'd be cringing at myself every other week). It was the condemning and spiteful tone in which she said it. The girls continued talking about the girl they disliked in high school; she had gotten pregnant at a young age, and was now struggling as a single mother of two.<br />
<br />
It was pretty painful to listen to, and a couple of times I couldn't help but turn and stare in wonder at their cavalier judgment. But mostly it made me think.<br />
<br />
It's so easy for me to say, <i>I would never do that</i>, and maybe that's true to an extent. But how many times have I judged someone for their appearance, or taken pleasure in their pain, or even used other people to make myself feel better? The answer is...<i>too often</i>.<br />
<br />
We are inherently judgmental as people and as a culture that values outer beauty and the philosophy that subscribes to "The World According to Me". I have no doubt that those girls felt avenged by putting down their old peer, but what good is it now? The hurt has been caused, and the choices are to make something good out of it or to perpetuate the cycle. I feel like I'm just sharing an old message, but clearly we need a reminder. I need a reminder nearly every day.<br />
<br />
Ladies, we're all in this together, and we can start growing inner beauty by building each other up, even if it's by what we <i>don't </i>say. This week, I'm checking myself and using my words to encourage others, rather than to feel better at their expense. Who's with me?<br />

I had always made excuses for why I couldn't do red lips. Too pale. Not the right lips. Not the right red. Recently, I'd started noticing Taylor Swift's red lips at nearly every red carpet event and thought, "She can't be much darker than me. If she can do it, so can I!" That started me on the quest for the perfect red. These were my requirements:<br />
<br />
Shamelessly red.<br />
Long lasting.<br />
Easy to apply.<br />
Mess-free.<br />
<br />
I started trying everything, from stains to glosses, from sticks to balms, and nothing had those four rules.<br />
<br />
A couple of weeks ago, I found <a href="http://www.milanicosmetics.com/p-82-lip-flash-full-coverage-pencil.aspx#!prettyPhoto[gallery1]/4/" target="_blank">Milani Lip Flash</a>. These gloss pencils were everything I'd wanted in red lip color. The two I am featuring in the photo above are 05 Hot Flash (I'm also wearing this one!) and 03 Flash Light.<br />
<br />
The pencil-top is perfect for lining the lips for a no-mess application, and they were as easy as coloring in a picture! As you can see, they are also <i>quite</i> red, and they last longer than any other red I've tried.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Hey Beauty Bloggers! We have a quickie hair tutorial for you today! What I love about this scrunchy braid is that it goes with any length hair! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This summer, my friend Sam cut her hair herself, and I think the bob suits her face and personality perfectly! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To begin, we section off a small bit of hair from the topmost layer and make a loose braid from the roots to a half-to-an-inch (depending on your ends) from the tips. </div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvA7mJWumwIlED-G2wifYUZAvCwXcbuSAUuGTCtWRRN567EcmOqgXLzMCm0Z-jESfL0iAs-BirNWBpfkMGH-ea8HA7OQLhsIjnWDkxq7ZVvYsZLpNJ4FfEL-ttuv_WF_aDMOTMqdHQy-w/s1600/sam3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvA7mJWumwIlED-G2wifYUZAvCwXcbuSAUuGTCtWRRN567EcmOqgXLzMCm0Z-jESfL0iAs-BirNWBpfkMGH-ea8HA7OQLhsIjnWDkxq7ZVvYsZLpNJ4FfEL-ttuv_WF_aDMOTMqdHQy-w/s400/sam3.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: left;">Photo by: Rory M.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now comes the tricky part. At the end of the braid, separate the two outermost pieces from the center piece. With one hand, hold the center piece in place, and with the other, slide the two outermost pieces up the braid. This will give it the "scrunched" look. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then, just slide and assemble the now-scrunched outer pieces until they achieve your desired look. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When it looks the way you want, tie it off with an elastic, and you're ready to rock it! </div>

Petite.<br />
Hobbit.<br />
Fun-sized.<br />
Vertically challenged.<br />
<br />
They all mean the same thing- short. I stopped growing at the age of twelve, and it's had its perks and not-so-perks. The good things are that I still get hand-me-downs, and much of my old high school wardrobe still fits. The bad thing is that as a woman breaking into the professional world, hand-me-downs and high school band tees don't always work for a given occasion.<br />
<br />
Recently, I discovered a shopping technique that has saved me both money and time. It's also a trick my mother (another petite lady) has been exploiting for the past twenty-something years.<br />
<br />
Are you ready for this? The Children's Department.<br />
<br />
Yes, I'm serious. Gap Kids, Crew Cuts, Abercrombie, '77 Kids- These are all name brands that I have bought children's clothes from in the past year. Obviously, I'm not going to be fitting my hips into a pair of kids jeans, and some clothes just look <i>childish</i>. However, outerwear, tops, tights, skirts, and even some dresses have fit, and you wouldn't even know they weren't petite! (The shirt I'm modeling in the photo is from Abercrombie Kids.) The benefit to this is that I can get some items that are proportionate to a smaller frame without paying extra to get them tailored.<br />
<br />
I wouldn't recommend searching for your entire professional wardrobe in the children's department of your favorite store, but it's sometimes fun to poke around and see what you might find. Give it a shot, and send us your finds!<br />

In case you've been wondering if Alysha and I fell off a cliff or something, we've only gone (in my case, back) to college.<br />
<br />
Although we've missed you too, this transition period would not have been so smooth without taking some time off. That said, we are so excited to get back to beauty and blogging!<br />
<br />
With Alysha in Arizona, and me in Boston, the different styles will be more interesting than usual. I already sense myself morphing to the more "typical" style of the student body here. We're looking forward to sharing new styles and tips in the upcoming months, and appreciate your patience as we adapt and plan for another semester of beauty.<br />
<br />
Lots of love!<br />

He was torn between a bacon cheeseburger, or a grilled cheese with bacon. As his break window got shorter and shorter, I asked him finally “Well, what are you hungry for? Do you really want a burger, or do you just want bacon and cheese?”. He made up his mind immediately, and ordered the grilled cheese, getting exactly what he really wanted without anything superfluous. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #500050; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

It’s not always easy to pinpoint what you really want, what you’re really hungry for. But in today’s culture of instant gratification, we rush to satisfy that hunger immediately, and more often than not, we miss the mark. We eat when we’re hungry for something to do. We compulsively shop when we’re hungry for happiness. But these things are like ordering a salad when you really want a steak: they relieve that hunger in the moment, but that real desire never goes away, and you’re often left hungrier than you were when you started.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #500050; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

My true moment of realization came last fall, when my dog, my dopey, lovable companion of nine years, passed away. After we put him to sleep, my family stood in the kitchen together – and polished off an entire batch of chocolate chip cookies. Did eating make us feel better in the moment? Maybe. But it didn’t erase the feelings of emptiness or loneliness that we all felt; instead, it piled on feelings of guilt and shame on top of those.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

It was a lot easier to bury the pain of losing my dog under cookies than face that hurt head on. It takes a lot more effort and a lot more time to satisfy that type of hunger, and involves the discomfort of loss, pain, loneliness. It entails opening up, exposing yourself as imperfect, emotional, vulnerable.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

Count to ten. Ask yourself <i>“Is this what I’m really hungry for?”</i>. If it’s not, I challenge you not to give into your vice. Call your friend. Go for a walk. Write. Read. Just sit in the middle of a room and think about stuff. Satiate that emotional hunger.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

They recognize and tackle their own emotions, knowing that the temporary pain of conquering their feelings is not greater than the permanent happiness that follows. They are clear headed, rational, and thoughtful. They are the grilled cheese and bacon sandwich, unburdened with the unnecessary weight of the burger. And they are beautiful.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="color: #222222; font-size: 10pt;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I found this online, and what I liked about it is that its focus on beauty seems not in what the speaker wears or does to him/herself. The beauty they speak of comes from what and with whom they choose to surround themself. It's a lovely reminder that with a new season, and new routines, come new beauties to inspire us if we choose them. </span><br />

Although we love all things beauty-related, there are also other things that light our fire that we'd love to share! </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"><br />

</span> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">These differ from Eye of the Beholder in that they are not beauty blogs. They are merely a means for readers to get to know us a little more. So, check us out! Thanks for reading :)</span><br />
